RALEIGH (July 27, 2022) – The General Assembly responded to North Carolina’s need for engineers last year with “Engineering NC’s Future,” which provided $125 million for expansion of engineering programs at NC State, UNC Charlotte and N.C. A&T State University.1
“That’s big for all of us, but it’s also big for the economy,” NC State Chancellor Randy Woodson says in the accompanying video.
“And it provides access to these high school graduates, and makes sure that all of our institutions are working together to provide the skilled workforce that North Carolina will need to keep our economy moving forward,” he says.
“What does it mean for us? It’s a 40% increase. Now think about that: That’s 4,000 students. We have 10,000 students in engineering now. When we’ve grown to meet the goals that the legislature set out for us, we’ll be at 14,000,” Woodson says.
About two-thirds of those students will be undergraduates, he says, and one-third will be graduate students.
