RALEIGH – At the very time thousands of businesses have ordered layoffs in response to the coronavirus pandemic, the leaders of Bandwidth Inc. on NC State University’s Centennial Campus did the opposite.
Bandwidth, which makes software for voice conferencing by Zoom, Google and other customers, announced last week that it will spend $30 million for a piece of state property in Raleigh, invest $103 million and add as many as 1,165 new jobs with an average pay of $96,832 over the next eight years.1
Voice conferencing has exploded as governors across the nation have issued stay-at-home orders in an effort to slow the spread of the virus. Bandwidth’s customers include Google, Microsoft, Cisco Systems and Zoom.
“We’re enabling a more connected world at a time when people everywhere need it most,” Bandwidth CEO David Morken said. “Our mission is critical, and we remain steadfast in continuing to execute on that mission for the people of North Carolina and all Americans. We are proud to be North Carolina raised!”2
In particular, Morken said Bandwidth – which spun off its Republic Wireless mobile phone division in 20163 – is committed to North Carolina because of the talent generated by the state’s universities and community colleges.
