WINSTON-SALEM – Winston-Salem State University takes student support seriously.
“It goes back to who we are as a university – I mean, we are family,” Dr. Stephanie Dance-Barnes, Interim Associate Provost, says in the accompanying video at WSSU’s Student Success Center.1
The Student Success Center is a one-stop shop where students can get academic help, learn about internships and jobs, pursue study abroad, get help with technology or access mentors and advisors.2
“Our motto is, ‘Enter to learn, depart to serve.’ So when we think about student success and who we are, it’s geared toward that motto and making sure we’re equipping students to do just that,” Dance-Barnes says.
“A part of that is making sure we’re letting them know it’s OK to be different. It’s OK to not have the same academic skills as someone else.
“What’s important is that the skills that you do have and the skills that make you unique is what we’re going to work on developing and cultivating. And those areas where there might be deficiencies – we’re going to work to develop those as well.”
